About us

PurSea is a Norwegian ocean-farming company from Rødøy on the Helgeland coast. We grow kelp on lines in our own sea, harvest it, and turn it into food worth craving. Norwegian Seaweed Co. is our food brand — the can on your table is the end of a value chain we own from idea to lid.

Bright midsummer night over the sea at Rødøy, Helgeland

Where it began

Two things are easy to take for granted when you live here — and impossible to forget once you have really seen them: water so clean you can count the stones on the bottom, and summer nights so bright you lose track of the clock. That is the inspiration, plainly. Founder Carl Erik Bergwitz-Larsen started PurSea on a quiet conviction: that the most remarkable harvest in the Arctic sea might not be the fish — but the forest they swim through.

It starts smaller than you'd believe

Every can begins as seedlings finer than thread, set out on ropes in our sea at Bukkøya. From here, the ocean does the work — no farmland, no fresh water, no fertiliser.

The sea takes over

Through the cold months the kelp grows underwater, quietly building the depth of flavour that ends up in the can. We check on it more often than strictly necessary.

Ripened by the midnight sun

Then the light returns — and stays. Under the midnight sun the blades grow long and full, ripening around the clock in some of the cleanest water in the world.

Harvest

Cold hands, full ropes, and the smell of clean sea. Every batch is traceable to the line it grew on — that is what owning the whole chain means.

To Lofoten, and into the can

Fresh and fine, the kelp travels to the factory in Lofoten — where it becomes a green, savoury pesto, a creamy hummus, and two curries that make dinner a five-second decision. Cooked, canned, done.

And then — the whole point

Straight from the can, on good bread, or into tonight's dinner. Real food from the Arctic sea, made to be eaten with appetite rather than admired. Vel bekomme — enjoy.

We think kelp is one of the most sensible foods on the planet. But we would rather you taste it than take our word for it. Start with the pesto in your pasta — and see how fast the can empties.
